TO ALL NEW IMMIGRANTS

The temporary I-551 stamp in your passport is valid for one (1) year. Within this time, approximately 4-6 months, you should receive your Permanent Resident Card (green card) in the mail. It will be sent by registered mail to your home and you must sign for it personally.

You may leave the United States for a short period of time. You should remember that you must spend more time living in the United States than out of the United States or you will jeopardize your status here in the U.S.and may forfeit you permanent residence status and you permanent resident card. If there is a valid reason you need to leave the United States for a long period of time, you may apply for a re-entry permit that will allow you to stay out of the United States legally for up to 2 years. You may apply for this at your local U.S. Immigration and Naturalization office in the district that you live.
